Each niche within a community, weather that is a demand for coffee or homeless shelters has a fluctuating demand. Each type of service or product has different rates of change and different shapes to their curve. A durable product will eventually saturate the market it is being sold into and the demand will decline, shrinking the niche.
This can be good or bad depending on the need. Reduced consumption of kitchen appliances reduces the volume of materials being used which can be a good thing.
